Methane, widely distributed in nature, is the simplest organic compound and the main component of natural gas, biogas, pit gas, etc. It is commonly known as gas. It is also the hydrocarbon with the lowest carbon content (the highest hydrogen content), and is the main component of natural gas, biogas, oilfield gas, and coal mine pit gas. It can be used as a fuel and as a raw material for manufacturing substances such as hydrogen, carbon black, carbon monoxide, acetylene, hydrogen cyanide, and formaldehyde.

Methane chlorination can yield chloroform, dichloromethane, trichloromethane, and carbon tetrachloride.
Storage, transportation and precautions
It should be stored in a cool and ventilated warehouse, with a temperature not exceeding 30 ℃, and kept away from sparks and heat sources. Prevent direct sunlight. It should be stored separately from oxygen, compressed air, halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine), oxidants, etc., and mixed storage and transportation should be avoided. The warehouse should use explosion-proof electrical appliances and be equipped with corresponding types and quantities of fire-fighting equipment.
